Calls for Independent Oversight of Windrush Compensation Scheme

Campaigners are urging the UK government to transfer control of the Windrush compensation scheme from the Home Office to an independent body. This push comes after a letter signed by around 70 public figures highlights the scheme’s failures, particularly in providing adequate support to those affected by the Windrush scandal. Many claimants have received little to no compensation, with reports indicating that over half of the claims have been denied.

The Windrush Justice Community Collective (WJCC) argues that the Home Office’s involvement is a conflict of interest, as it is the same department responsible for the injustices faced by the Windrush generation. They are advocating for a complete overhaul of the scheme, including the establishment of a statutory public inquiry and the provision of free legal assistance for claimants, which is currently lacking.

Survivors of other state failures, such as the Hillsborough and Grenfell disasters, have expressed solidarity with the Windrush claimants, emphasizing the need for justice and accountability. They warn that the ongoing delays in compensation are costing lives, with over 60 individuals reportedly dying while waiting for redress.

The call for reform highlights a growing recognition of the systemic issues within the Home Office and the urgent need for a fair and transparent process to ensure that those wronged by government actions receive the justice they deserve.
