Calls for Inquiry into Army Training College Amid Abuse Allegations

Allegations of sexual assault and harassment at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate have sparked calls for an independent inquiry. Four women have come forward, detailing a culture of misogyny and abuse during their training. This situation raises serious questions about the safety and welfare of young recruits in military environments.

The Army Foundation College, which trains under-18 recruits, has faced scrutiny over its handling of complaints. Former MP Sarah Atherton, who led a review on women’s experiences in the armed forces, emphasized that public confidence can only be restored through a thorough investigation. The lack of accountability and transparency in addressing these allegations is concerning.

Reports indicate that between January 2018 and June 2025, there were 176 complaints of inappropriate sexual behaviour at the college. This alarming statistic highlights a systemic issue within the institution that could deter potential recruits and damage the Army’s reputation.

As the Army calls for victims to come forward, the need for effective safeguarding measures becomes increasingly urgent. Without significant reforms and a commitment to addressing these issues, the Army risks losing the trust of both recruits and the public, which could have long-term implications for recruitment and retention.
