Lee Barron, the Labour MP for Corby and East Northamptonshire, has urged the government to nationalise the operations of East Midlands Railway (EMR), citing persistent complaints from constituents about service reliability. Barron highlighted that many passengers have been left stranded due to frequent cancellations, particularly affecting routes to London and Kettering.
The push for nationalisation comes as the government plans to transition nearly all rail services in England to the newly established Great British Railways (GBR) by 2027. This move aims to improve service quality and accountability, as EMR’s performance has been deemed unsatisfactory, with a recent reduction in service timetables exacerbating the situation.
Barron has requested that EMR be given notice to transfer its services to GBR before its contract expires on October 18. He argues that the current service cuts and cancellations are unacceptable for constituents who rely on these trains for daily commutes.
In response, EMR acknowledged the service issues and attributed them to various factors, including extreme weather and infrastructure problems. The Department for Transport has stated that they are monitoring the situation and will decide on the transfer of services in due course, aiming to enhance the overall passenger experience.
