A significant car bomb was intercepted while attempting to cross the Irish border into the UK, underscoring persistent security threats from dissident republicans. The operation, led by Garda, resulted in the arrest of two individuals, including a woman in her 20s and a man in his 40s, both of whom are now facing serious charges.

The bomb, reportedly ready for use, contained military-grade explosives and was intended for deployment as an under-car bomb in Northern Ireland. This incident not only reveals the ongoing risk posed by radicalised groups but also highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-sharing between Garda and the PSNI in preventing potential attacks.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly expressed concern over the radicalisation of young individuals, indicating that this demographic is increasingly being targeted by extremist ideologies. The interception of this device is a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and cooperation in addressing the threats posed by such groups.

Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan reiterated the importance of ongoing collaboration between law enforcement agencies in both jurisdictions, emphasizing that this incident serves as a warning about the enduring nature of dissident republican activity. The successful defusal of the bomb before it could be used is a significant achievement in safeguarding public safety.
