An elderly woman tragically consumed dog food due to a carer’s mistake, raising serious concerns about care standards. The incident, which occurred in June 2024, involved a carer mistaking dog food for a meal labelled as ‘lamb dinner.’ This error was only discovered after the woman had already ingested the food.
Following the incident, an investigation revealed a pattern of inadequate care provided by Radis Community Care, including logging false visit records and failing to meet the basic needs of the woman. Portsmouth City Council’s lack of oversight during the investigation process has also been criticized, as it took six months to conclude what should have been a swift inquiry.
The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman described the care provided as ‘abysmal,’ emphasizing that vulnerable individuals deserve better protection and scrutiny. The woman’s family received refunds and an additional compensation, but the question remains about the systemic failures that allowed such neglect to occur.
