Care Workers May Avoid Stricter Immigration Rules in the UK

In a significant move for the social care sector, existing care workers in the UK could be exempt from new immigration rules aimed at tightening the right to remain. This proposal, being considered by Andy Burnham, aims to alleviate the pressure on a sector already struggling with recruitment and retention. The exemption could allow hundreds of thousands of care workers to continue their roles without the added burden of stricter immigration requirements.

Burnham’s personal connection to the care system, stemming from his father’s battle with Alzheimer’s, underscores the urgency of this initiative. He plans to address the need for reform in a forthcoming speech, highlighting the broken nature of the current system and the challenges faced by care workers. The proposed changes may not be included in his immediate address but could emerge later this year, contingent on public consultation outcomes.

The potential exemption comes as the government faces criticism over plans that could double the time it takes for migrant workers to achieve settled status. This change could disproportionately impact the care sector, which relies heavily on foreign workers. Unison, the largest union in the UK, has voiced concerns that without addressing recruitment issues, vulnerable individuals will suffer.

As the government considers funding options for a new National Care Service, the implications of these immigration rule changes could reshape the landscape of social care in the UK. Increased investment in care services and a focus on retaining existing workers may be crucial steps in addressing the sector’s long-standing challenges.
