Chad’s Refugees Face Water Crisis After Fleeing Sudanese Conflict

Sudanese refugees in Chad are facing a severe water shortage as they escape the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Over 938,000 refugees have entered Chad since April 2023, fleeing violence that has left many traumatized and struggling for survival. Camps in eastern Chad, such as Goudrane, are overwhelmed, with some families surviving on less than half of the United Nations’ minimum water supply recommendations.

The humanitarian crisis is exacerbated by limited funding and deteriorating infrastructure, leaving aid organizations like Solidarites International unable to meet the growing needs. As the conflict escalates in Sudan, the influx of refugees continues, bringing with them the psychological and physical scars of war.

Many refugees recount harrowing experiences, including loss of family and brutal attacks during their escape. Zahra Khamis, a survivor of violence in Sudan, described the traumatic journey to safety, highlighting the stark reality faced by those fleeing the conflict.

As conditions worsen in the camps, hope for returning home dims. The international community’s response has been slow, and the future remains uncertain for those displaced by this humanitarian crisis. The need for clean water, safety, and support is urgent as the war in Sudan shows no signs of abating.
