Challenges Facing Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh and Myanmar

The plight of Rohingya refugees remains dire as repatriation to Myanmar appears increasingly unattainable. Despite claims from Myanmar’s military-backed government about verifying refugees for return, the ongoing civil war and lack of security in Rakhine State make safe repatriation impossible. Analysts argue that conditions are worse now than in 2017, when over 750,000 Rohingya fled violence.

In Bangladesh, where around 1.2 million Rohingya reside in overcrowded camps, worsening conditions are leading to desperate measures. Funding shortages and food insecurity are rampant, pushing families to make harrowing choices, such as child marriage and labor, to survive. The UN has reported alarming increases in malnutrition among children, highlighting the urgent need for international support.

As the situation deteriorates, many Rohingya are attempting perilous sea journeys to other Southeast Asian countries, driven by the hope of a better life. However, this trend raises concerns about their safety and the potential for exploitation by human traffickers. The rise in gang violence within the camps further complicates their already precarious existence.

The international community faces pressure to address the humanitarian crisis effectively. Experts emphasize that without genuine burden-sharing and support for Bangladesh, the cycle of suffering for the Rohingya will continue, with no clear path to safety or stability in sight.
