A significant rescue operation unfolded in the English Channel today after a ‘mega-dinghy’ carrying approximately 160 migrants caught fire. The incident occurred off the coast of Boulogne-sur-Mer, prompting immediate action from the RNLI Eastbourne and both British and French coastguards.

As the fire engulfed the vessel, many occupants were forced to jump into the frigid waters, leading to a swift response from rescue teams. Reports indicate that 157 individuals were successfully rescued, although some suffered from hypothermia due to the cold conditions.

This incident highlights the increasing use of large dinghies for dangerous crossings, raising concerns about the safety of migrants and the role of criminal gangs in facilitating these perilous journeys. The Home Office has emphasized that such events serve as a stark reminder of the risks involved in these crossings.

The situation underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Channel, where lives are at stake. As authorities continue to address the challenges posed by these crossings, the need for effective solutions to ensure the safety of migrants becomes ever more pressing.
