A man has been charged with dangerous driving after a police officer was seriously injured when struck by a stolen police car in Downpatrick, County Down. The incident unfolded early on a Sunday morning when police attempted to stop a vehicle, leading to a chase that ended with the officer being hit while responding to the scene. The officer, who discharged his weapon during the incident, required immediate medical assistance but survived the encounter.

This incident highlights the escalating risks faced by police officers in the line of duty, particularly in situations involving stolen vehicles. The police have noted that such reckless behaviour not only endangers officers but also poses a significant threat to public safety. The ongoing investigation by the Police Ombudsman’s Office aims to gather evidence and assess the circumstances surrounding the shooting and subsequent injuries.

In addition to the 27-year-old charged with dangerous driving, another man, aged 36, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, indicating a serious escalation in the nature of the crime. A 27-year-old woman is also in custody for related offences, underscoring the complexity of the incident and the potential for further legal repercussions.

As the investigation continues, this case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily, prompting discussions about police safety measures and community support for local law enforcement agencies.
