Charterhall: From Military Base to Scotland’s Hottest Spot

Charterhall, a site in the Scottish Borders, has a rich history that reflects its transformation from a military airfield to a weather station known for recording Scotland’s highest temperature. In July 2022, it reached 34.8C, surpassing the previous record set nearly two decades earlier. This change in function highlights how historical sites can adapt over time while still retaining echoes of their past.

Originally established as a World War One landing site, Charterhall served various military purposes until its closure in 1947. The dangers of wartime flying training are memorialised at the site, where many airmen lost their lives. This history adds a layer of significance to the area, reminding visitors of the sacrifices made during the conflicts.

In 1952, the former airfield was repurposed as a racing circuit, attracting motorsport legends like Jim Clark and Stirling Moss. This shift not only brought a new life to the site but also contributed to its cultural heritage, showcasing the evolution of recreational activities in the region.

Today, the weather station at Charterhall provides valuable data for climate monitoring and forecasting. Its ongoing use as a private airstrip and the preservation of its wartime layout serve as a testament to its multifaceted history, making it a unique landmark in Scotland.
