Cheltenham Council Considers Higher Parking Charges for Larger Vehicles

Cheltenham Borough Council is exploring the possibility of imposing higher parking charges on larger vehicles, including some SUVs. This initiative stems from concerns about ‘carspreading’, where the increasing size and weight of modern cars are straining existing parking facilities. The council aims to assess how different vehicle types impact parking operations and whether a differential pricing system could be justified.

The proposal, led by Green Party councillor Jan Foster, has sparked a debate about the implications of vehicle weight versus emissions. While some councillors support the idea, others, like Liberal Democrat councillor Richard Lawler, caution against the complexities of defining vehicle categories. He argues that not all heavier vehicles are oversized, and clear definitions are crucial before implementing any changes.

The scrutiny committee will investigate the operational effects of various vehicle sizes on council-owned car parks. Although the council generated a surplus of over £3 million from parking operations in the last financial year, some members question whether now is the right time to increase charges, given the financial pressures on households.

As discussions continue, the council will not immediately raise parking fees for larger vehicles. Instead, they will gather evidence to determine if such changes are fair and necessary, reflecting a growing trend in urban areas to reconsider parking policies in light of evolving vehicle sizes.
