Anton Honchanka, a Chernobyl disaster evacuee, recalls his transformative experience in Wales during the summer of 1999. At just 11 years old, he was part of the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline program, which aimed to provide medical aid and a respite from the lingering effects of radiation in Belarus. His journey to the UK coincided with significant events, yet it was the warmth of his host families that left a lasting impression.

Upon arriving, Anton was welcomed by the Davies family, who made him feel at home despite the language barrier. He later stayed with the Amoss family in Llanharry, who treated him and his friend Dmitry with kindness, creating cherished memories of friendship and adventure. The clean air and healthy environment of Wales significantly improved their health, reducing radiation levels in their bodies.

Now 38, Anton expresses deep gratitude for the support he received, stating that the people of Wales have remained close to his heart. He reflects on how the experience shaped his life and the importance of community support in making a difference for children affected by the disaster. The Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline program continues to impact lives, with many families in the UK still welcoming children from affected regions.

As the world marks 40 years since the Chernobyl disaster, stories like Anton’s highlight the ongoing need for humanitarian efforts and the profound connections formed across borders. His desire to reconnect with his host families underscores the lasting bonds created through compassion and care during a time of crisis.
