A group of child golfers at Blackwell Grange Golf Club in County Durham faced an unexpected encounter when a shot landed on a three-metre boa constrictor. This incident follows the discovery of two boa constrictors, believed to have been illegally abandoned, within a week of each other at the same location.
The first snake was found by a 13-year-old girl searching for her golf ball, while the second was spotted just six days later. Both snakes were likely pets released irresponsibly, raising concerns about the potential for more non-native species in the area. Reptile experts warn that such actions are illegal under UK law.
The presence of these snakes has left golfers uneasy, particularly around the fifth hole where both were found. Although non-venomous and not a direct threat to humans, the situation highlights the risks of exotic pets being abandoned in the wild, which can disrupt local ecosystems.
As temperatures drop, the survival of these tropical snakes becomes increasingly precarious. Experts urge the public to report any sightings rather than attempting to handle the animals, emphasising the importance of responsible pet ownership to prevent similar incidents in the future.
