Children Detained as Adults Under Controversial Migration Deal

Recent figures reveal that nearly 100 children have been mistakenly detained as adults under the UK-France migration deal, raising serious concerns about child safeguarding practices. Of the 304 age-disputed cases reviewed, 31% were found to be minors, highlighting a significant flaw in the system designed to protect vulnerable individuals.

The Home Office’s ‘one in, one out’ initiative, which aims to manage the flow of migrants, has resulted in some children being held for over six months, far exceeding the policy limit of 24 hours for unaccompanied minors. This prolonged detention not only violates established guidelines but also subjects these children to potential health risks, as some were prepared for removal despite needing medical treatment.

Critics argue that the deal, officially known as Operation Hillmore, is failing to adequately protect children and survivors of abuse. The independent monitoring boards have expressed alarm over the effectiveness of age assessments, which can take weeks to complete, leaving children in limbo and at risk of further trauma.

As the government plans to implement AI technology to improve age assessments, the urgency for reform is clear. Advocates are calling for immediate changes to ensure that children are not wrongfully treated as adults, emphasizing the need for trained professionals to conduct assessments and safeguard these vulnerable individuals.
