China’s Defence Chief Advocates for Shared Security Amid Rising Tensions

At the Beijing Xiangshan Forum, Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun called for an end to coercive actions in international relations, highlighting the need for shared security governance. His remarks come at a time of heightened tensions in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly concerning Taiwan and the South China Sea. While he refrained from directly naming the US or Japan, his comments are seen as a veiled critique of Japan’s military posture and historical actions.

Dong emphasized the importance of learning from history to prevent the resurgence of militarism and hegemonic tendencies. This approach aims to foster a more inclusive dialogue among nations, particularly in the context of military cooperation. The forum serves as a platform for China to assert its vision of a multipolar world, advocating for a stronger voice for the Global South in global governance.

The absence of direct criticism towards the US and Japan indicates a strategic choice by China to maintain diplomatic channels while promoting its military diplomacy. This could reflect a desire to avoid escalating tensions further, especially with Japan, which has faced criticism from Beijing for its military alignment with the US.

As regional dynamics shift, the implications of Dong’s address may influence future military collaborations and security policies among Asian nations, potentially reshaping alliances and responses to perceived threats in the region.
