Mayors from over 50 cities are collaborating to tackle the escalating threat of extreme heat, a growing concern exacerbated by climate change. The initiative, known as ’50@50′, aims to share effective strategies and enhance urban resilience against rising temperatures, which have already begun reshaping daily life in many urban areas.

The urgency of this collaboration is underscored by alarming climate projections, indicating that heatwaves could become significantly more frequent and intense. Cities like Antalya and Athens are leading the way with targeted heat action plans, focusing on vulnerable populations and implementing cooling infrastructure, green spaces, and early-warning systems.

As cities adapt to these challenges, the sharing of knowledge and experiences becomes crucial. For instance, Paris is helping other cities develop stress tests to prepare for extreme heat scenarios, highlighting the importance of cooperation in urban planning and climate adaptation.

The initiative also reflects a broader trend where even northern cities like Oulu are recognizing the need to adapt to unprecedented heat levels. This collective action not only aims to protect residents but also addresses the socio-economic disparities exacerbated by climate impacts, ensuring a more equitable response to the climate crisis.
