A year-long exploration of England and Wales’ coastal towns reveals a stark reality for young people. Many face isolation and limited opportunities, exacerbated by a 73% decline in youth service funding over the past decade. This has left nearly one million young people aged 16 to 24 not in education, employment, or training, particularly in deprived coastal areas.
The Against the Tide project aims to highlight these challenges while showcasing the resilience and creativity of youth in these communities. Through workshops and exhibitions, young people are encouraged to share their experiences and visions for the future, fostering a sense of connection and empowerment.
Despite the grim statistics, there is a growing movement to amplify their voices. Initiatives like the Young People on the Coast Action Network are emerging, aiming to involve youth in decision-making processes that affect their lives.
