Cockpit Error Leads to Dangerous Takeoff Mistake at Luton Airport

An EasyJet flight recently took off from the wrong position at Luton Airport, raising serious safety concerns. The incident, which occurred on June 13 last year, involved Flight EZY2335, an Airbus A320 carrying 180 passengers. The crew mistakenly initiated takeoff from a position that left them just 65 feet from the runway’s end, a critical error that could have had dire consequences.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) reported that the co-pilot had initially planned to use a specific runway intersection but opted for a full-length departure due to the aircraft’s weight and environmental conditions. However, they ultimately took off from an incorrect position, highlighting potential lapses in communication and situational awareness among the crew.

This incident is not isolated; another EasyJet flight faced a similar mistake at Manchester Airport shortly after. The AAIB classified both occurrences as serious, warning that heavier aircraft or adverse weather could have exacerbated the risks. Investigators noted that habitual behaviour and confirmation bias among the crew likely contributed to these errors.

In response, EasyJet has reviewed its take-off procedures and emphasised its commitment to safety. This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of adherence to protocols in aviation, where even minor oversights can lead to significant dangers.
