Community Saves Cemetery Sheep from Sale

A pair of sheep at Mount Road Cemetery in St Asaph, Denbighshire, have been spared from sale after a wave of local support. Initially brought in to manage the cemetery’s grass, the sheep’s friendly but intrusive behaviour caused concern when one visitor fell while trying to avoid them. This incident prompted plans to sell the sheep, but community members rallied, highlighting their positive impact on visitors, including children and the elderly.

The sheep, raised as pets, have become beloved figures in the cemetery, providing comfort to those who visit. Their presence not only helps maintain the grounds but also fosters connections among visitors. Local resident Duncan Cameron noted that the sheep effectively navigate around gravestones, making maintenance easier and less damaging than using mowers.

In response to the community’s outcry, Cameron announced that the sheep would remain, with measures in place to manage their interactions with visitors. A notice has been posted advising people to clap or shout if the sheep approach too closely, ensuring a safe environment for everyone.

This incident underscores the importance of community engagement in local decisions and the unexpected roles animals can play in enhancing public spaces. The sheep’s future in the cemetery is now secure, thanks to the heartfelt support from the community.
