In a remarkable display of community spirit, around 1,800 volunteers gathered in Hirosaki, Japan, to help move a 360-tonne castle keep back to its original position. This event, part of ongoing renovations following earthquake damage, employed the ancient technique of hikiya, which involves moving buildings on rollers rather than dismantling them. Participants chanted in unison as they pulled the structure, showcasing a blend of tradition and teamwork.

The event attracted significant interest, with approximately 8,000 applications for the limited slots, highlighting the cultural importance of Hirosaki Castle. This castle, a designated important cultural property, is one of only 12 remaining keeps in Japan and serves as a major tourist attraction, especially during cherry blossom season. The community’s involvement not only aids in preservation but also fosters a sense of connection among participants.

As the keep is repositioned, it will undergo further preservation work, rendering it inaccessible to tourists for several years. The entire project is expected to conclude by 2033, when the castle will once again welcome visitors. This initiative not only preserves a vital piece of history but also strengthens community ties, reminding participants of their shared heritage.

The event is a poignant reminder of the importance of cultural preservation and community engagement. As the keep is moved, it symbolizes the collective effort to maintain Japan’s rich history, ensuring that future generations can appreciate this architectural marvel.
