Researchers have highlighted significant gaps in the evidence surrounding the vaccination of badgers against bovine tuberculosis (TB) in Wales. While vaccination is part of the Welsh government’s strategy to eradicate TB, doubts remain about its effectiveness in reducing disease transmission to cattle.
The British Ecological Society’s Wales policy group, alongside university researchers, is calling for enhanced monitoring of vaccination impacts and a comprehensive review of current evidence. They stress that understanding how many badgers are vaccinated and the resulting effects on cattle disease levels is critical for future strategies.
Dr Niall McKeown, a key researcher, pointed out that badger vaccination should not be viewed as a standalone solution. He noted that while BCG vaccination protects badgers, the evidence linking it to decreased TB in cattle is limited. Effective cattle controls and targeted vaccination efforts are essential to achieve tangible benefits.
The Welsh government is renewing its approach to tackling TB, focusing on a balanced strategy that includes cattle, wildlife, and public engagement. As the situation evolves, the emphasis on evidence-based policies will be crucial in shaping the future of TB management in Wales.
