Concerns Grow Over Kidney Cancer Rates Near Chemical Plant

A recent study has raised alarms about elevated kidney cancer rates near a factory in Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire, linked to harmful forever chemicals. Despite the government-funded investigation concluding no significant cancer cluster exists, experts are questioning the findings, suggesting that the data may downplay potential health risks.

The AGC Chemicals Europe plant emitted approximately 49 tonnes of PFOA, a carcinogenic substance, from the 1950s until 2012. Although the factory ceased using PFOA in 2012, concerns linger about its long-term effects on local health, particularly as two areas near the factory reported higher-than-expected kidney cancer cases.

Experts argue that the study’s conclusions may overlook critical evidence, with calls for further research and blood testing to assess residents’ exposure levels. The law firm Leigh Day is investigating potential legal claims on behalf of affected residents, highlighting the community’s growing unease.

Residents have been advised against consuming local produce due to contamination fears, and an allotment near the factory has been officially designated as contaminated land. As the investigation continues, the implications for public health and environmental safety remain significant, raising questions about accountability and future regulatory measures.
