Concerns Raised Over Homeless Centre Next to Children’s Facility

A proposed homelessness service next to a children’s centre in Belfast has sparked significant concern regarding child safety. Paul Doherty, founder of Foodstock, which operates the centre, argues that the presence of individuals in distress could pose a safeguarding risk to children. He highlights that arrivals and departures from the new facility could occur right next to families accessing educational support, raising fears about unpredictable situations.

While Extern, the organisation behind the homelessness service, insists that those seeking help should not be viewed as a risk, the debate underscores a growing tension between community support services and child protection. Extern’s initial plan included a needle exchange service, which has since been scrapped due to objections, but the core concerns about safety remain.

Doherty emphasises that the safeguarding measures proposed by Extern indicate a recognition of potential risks. He believes that the children’s centre should not have to compromise its mission to support families due to the location of a service dealing with complex issues. The situation highlights the delicate balance between providing necessary support for vulnerable populations and ensuring the safety of children.

As discussions continue, the outcome could set a precedent for how similar services are integrated within community spaces, impacting both the provision of support for the homeless and the safeguarding of children in educational environments.
