Concerns Rise in Gosport Over Asylum Seeker Housing Plans

Residents in Gosport are expressing significant concerns about plans to house 600 failed asylum seekers at the Haslar Immigration Removal Centre. Local resident David Robinson described the situation as ‘unsettling’, highlighting fears for safety and a sense of unease in the community. The centre, which is set to reopen after being closed in 2015, is located close to residential areas, raising alarms among locals about potential disturbances and safety issues.

The redevelopment plans include expanding the centre’s capacity from 130 to 600 beds, which has already led to complaints about noise and disruption during construction. Robinson noted that the ongoing work has affected daily life, with increased traffic and disturbances impacting the quality of living in the area. Many residents feel their concerns have been overlooked by authorities, leading to frustration and anxiety.

The local MP, Dame Caroline Dineage, echoed these sentiments, stating that the Government has mishandled communication with the community. She emphasized that the redevelopment process has been distressing for residents, who feel ignored and undervalued. The lack of proper engagement has left many questioning the suitability of the site for such a large number of detainees.

Moreover, the plans have reportedly impacted property values, with some homeowners experiencing a drop of up to £50,000. This financial strain adds another layer of concern for residents, who fear the long-term implications of having a detention centre in their neighbourhood. As the situation develops, the community remains on edge, grappling with the potential changes to their environment and safety.
