The Consequences of Autism and ADHD Diagnoses Without Treatment

Recent findings from the parliamentary and health service ombudsman reveal a troubling trend in autism and ADHD care in England. Complaints have surged over 200% in five years, highlighting systemic failures that leave many without necessary treatment after diagnosis. This situation is particularly dire for those who, after waiting long periods for assessment, find themselves with a diagnosis but no clear path to effective care.

The report emphasizes that while cognitive behavioural therapy is recommended for associated conditions like anxiety and depression, workforce shortages hinder access to these essential services. This gap means that even when patients are diagnosed, they often face a frustrating lack of support, leading to a hollow outcome that fails to address their needs.

As the NHS struggles to provide adequate care, many individuals are forced to seek private treatment, incurring significant costs. This not only exacerbates financial strain on families but also raises questions about equity in healthcare access, particularly for those who cannot afford private options.

Looking ahead, a new report by clinical psychologist Prof Peter Fonagy is anticipated to propose a comprehensive national approach. It is crucial that this strategy addresses not just waiting times but also the entire treatment pathway, ensuring that neurodivergent individuals receive the specialized care they require for a better quality of life.
