Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has condemned Russia’s systematic attacks on Ukraine’s healthcare system, describing them as a deliberate strategy rather than incidental collateral damage. This ongoing assault has led to the destruction of over 2,500 medical facilities, severely crippling access to essential healthcare services. As a result, patients with chronic conditions face increased risks, suffering, and even death due to the lack of available treatment options.
The World Health Organisation has documented nearly 2,815 attacks on healthcare since the full-scale invasion began, highlighting a troubling trend of violence against medical staff and facilities. The precision of these attacks raises concerns about intent, as ambulances and healthcare workers are targeted, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
With healthcare facilities understaffed and overwhelmed, the impact on everyday lives is profound. The number of doctors in some areas has plummeted by as much as 66%, leaving many without necessary medical care. This situation is not just a statistic; it translates into real suffering for those who rely on consistent medical attention.
The implications extend beyond immediate health concerns, as the ongoing attacks threaten to destabilise the entire healthcare infrastructure in Ukraine. MSF is calling for international action to uphold humanitarian laws and protect medical facilities, urging the global community to respond to this escalating crisis.
