A cartoon shared by TUV leader Jim Allister has ignited criticism for its portrayal of migrants. The image, captioned “stop the buses,” depicts a bus labelled “migrant Express: from Dublin to Northern Ireland,” which many have labelled as racist. Alliance MLA Eoin Tennyson condemned the cartoon as “reckless and irresponsible,” especially in light of recent violence in Belfast.
Allister defended the cartoon, arguing it highlights what he perceives as the misuse of the Common Travel Area between the UK and Ireland. He claims that unchecked migration is a legitimate concern, suggesting that the image reflects a reality he believes needs addressing.
Critics, including Alliance MP Sorcha Eastwood, dismissed the cartoon as “crass” and indicative of a troubling trend in political discourse. They argue that such imagery detracts from the pressing issues of community safety and integration, especially following a recent knife attack that has left the community shaken.
This incident raises questions about the impact of political messaging on public sentiment, particularly in a region still grappling with the legacy of sectarian violence. As tensions rise, the way politicians communicate about sensitive topics like immigration could have lasting effects on societal cohesion in Northern Ireland.
