Council’s Planning Debacle Leaves Families Displaced and Homes Vacant

A planning controversy has erupted in Derby after the council forced 15 families to vacate their homes for a now-scrapped road extension project. National Highways spent over £6 million acquiring these properties on Queensway, only for the A38 expansion scheme to be cancelled due to budget cuts. The homes have remained empty for a decade, leading to significant public outcry and accusations of wasteful spending.

Residents who were displaced have expressed their heartbreak and frustration over the situation. Many feel that the compensation they received was inadequate, leaving them with little to show for their lost homes. The abandoned houses have become a target for vandalism, further highlighting the neglect of the area and the financial implications of the council’s decisions.

The A38 project, initially proposed 25 years ago, faced numerous delays and legal challenges, particularly from environmental groups concerned about its impact on local woodlands and air quality. Despite receiving approval earlier this year, the project was quickly earmarked for cancellation as the government seeks to cut £700 million from its roads budget to fund defence initiatives.

Local leaders are calling for renewed public engagement on the issue, as the decision to scrap the project has left many in the community feeling unheard. The situation raises questions about the future of urban planning in Derby and the balance between infrastructure development and environmental concerns, as well as the treatment of displaced residents.
