Court Ruling Highlights Shrinkflation in Chocolate Products

A German court has ruled that the manufacturer of Milka chocolate bars misled consumers by reducing the weight of its Alpenmilch bar from 100g to 90g while keeping the same packaging. This practice, known as shrinkflation, has been increasingly common as companies attempt to maintain prices amid rising production costs. The court found that the unchanged packaging created a deceptive expectation for consumers, who were unaware of the reduction in product size.

In the UK, similar shrinkflation tactics are affecting various products, including chocolate. Consumer group Which? has highlighted that chocolate prices have surged, driven by a global rise in cocoa costs due to poor harvests in West Africa. This means UK consumers may be paying more for less chocolate, often without realising the extent of the shrinkage.

As consumers become more aware of these practices, there may be increased pressure on manufacturers to be transparent about product sizes. This could lead to changes in packaging regulations or consumer backlash against brands perceived as deceptive.

Watch for potential shifts in consumer behaviour as awareness of shrinkflation grows. If more consumers demand clarity on product sizes, companies may need to adjust their marketing strategies and packaging to avoid legal repercussions and maintain trust.
