Oxfordshire County Council is intensifying efforts to tackle the illegal tobacco trade by urging motorists to report suspicious vehicles known as ‘stash cars.’ These cars are often parked near shops and are used by criminals to store and sell illegal tobacco products. The council’s recent operations have already led to the seizure of significant quantities of illegal tobacco, highlighting the growing concern over this issue.
The use of stash cars allows sellers to evade detection by trading standards officers, as they can quickly replenish their stock in small amounts. Signs that a vehicle may be a stash car include frequent short visits to retrieve items or transactions occurring directly from the car’s window or boot. This tactic not only undermines legitimate businesses but also poses health risks due to the unregulated nature of the products sold.
Councillor Kate Gregory emphasized that the illegal tobacco trade funds organized crime and undermines public health initiatives aimed at reducing smoking. The council is encouraging the public to report any suspicious activity anonymously, providing details such as the vehicle’s make, model, and registration number.
Residents are advised not to confront suspected sellers directly but to inform the council of any observations. This community-driven approach aims to enhance public safety and curb the illegal tobacco market, which has significant implications for local health and business integrity.
