Cuban Migration to Brazil Surges Amid Crisis

Brazil has recently intercepted 108 Cuban immigrants, highlighting a significant increase in asylum applications from Cuba, which now surpass those from Venezuela. This shift indicates a growing humanitarian crisis in Cuba, exacerbated by a fuel blockade from the United States that has crippled essential services and led to widespread shortages of food and medicine.

The Brazilian Ministry of Justice described the interception as part of a broader initiative to combat human trafficking and irregular migration. Many Cubans are using Guyana as a transit point to reach Brazil, with a notable concentration in the northern states of Roraima and Amapá.

The situation reflects a troubling trend, as the number of Cuban asylum requests has surged to over 40,000 in 2025, a stark increase compared to previous years. This rise is attributed to deteriorating conditions in Cuba, prompting fears of a new wave of migration similar to the mass exodus seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As geopolitical tensions between the US and Cuba continue, the Brazilian government anticipates that migration flows may further escalate. The implications for Brazil’s immigration policies and social services could be profound, as the country grapples with the influx of migrants seeking refuge from dire circumstances back home.
