Ole & Steen, a high-end bakery chain, has been fined £34,000 after a serious mouse infestation was discovered at its St James’s Market location in Westminster. Environmental health inspectors found significant rodent activity, including droppings in food preparation and storage areas, raising serious concerns about food safety.
The investigation, initiated in January 2025, revealed that the bakery was aware of the pest issue through its contractor but failed to take necessary action. This negligence not only compromised food hygiene but also violated multiple food safety standards, leading to three charges against the company.
In court, Ole & Steen admitted to failing to protect food from contamination risks. The hefty fine includes £26,000 for the violation and additional costs of £8,847. This case highlights the importance of maintaining rigorous hygiene standards in food establishments, especially in a city like London where public health is paramount.
Councillor Caroline Sargent emphasized that Westminster City Council will not tolerate lapses in food safety, stating that the prosecution serves as a warning to all food businesses about the consequences of neglecting hygiene practices.
