Debunking the Mbappé-Macron Allegation Hoax

A fake news article claiming that French football star Kylian Mbappé accused President Emmanuel Macron of sexual harassment has gone viral on social media. The misleading report suggests that this alleged behaviour was a reason for Mbappé’s move from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid in 2024. However, this story is entirely fabricated and originates from a counterfeit website designed to imitate Eurosport.

The counterfeit site, euro-sport.fr, closely resembles the legitimate Eurosport website, eurosport.fr, with only a minor difference in the URL. This deception is part of a broader trend of misinformation that exploits public figures and their relationships to generate clicks and shares, often using AI-generated content that lacks authenticity.

The false narrative appears to play on existing memes and public perceptions of the relationship between Mbappé and Macron, particularly following the 2022 FIFA World Cup. During that event, Macron was seen comforting a visibly upset Mbappé, which has since been misinterpreted and manipulated in various online discussions.

As the World Cup approaches, the prevalence of such disinformation is likely to increase, highlighting the importance of critical media literacy among fans and the public. Awareness of these tactics can help mitigate the spread of false claims and protect the reputations of those involved.
