The Decline of London’s Bus Network: What It Means for Commuters

London’s iconic bus network is facing a troubling decline, with average speeds dropping significantly over the past decade. This slowdown is not just an inconvenience; it has serious implications for the millions who rely on buses for their daily commutes. With speeds falling by as much as 16%, many passengers are opting to abandon bus travel altogether, leading to a staggering 300 million fewer journeys each year.

As bus services become less reliable, the risk of a vicious cycle emerges: slower buses lead to fewer passengers, which in turn can result in service cuts. This trend is not isolated to London; other global cities are experiencing similar issues, raising concerns about public transport accessibility, particularly for the most vulnerable populations.

The financial ramifications are also significant. Slower buses necessitate more vehicles and staff to maintain service levels, driving up operational costs. Research indicates that improving bus speeds by just 10% could yield an additional £70 million in fares annually while reducing costs by £214 million.

As London grapples with these challenges, the future of its bus network hangs in the balance. The city must address these issues to ensure that public transport remains a viable option for all residents, particularly as urban congestion continues to grow.
