Declining Support for Asylum Seekers in Northern Ireland

Recent survey data reveals a significant decline in public support for asylum seekers in Northern Ireland, with only 49% of adults now in favour of allowing them to stay. This marks the first time since 2018 that support has fallen below half, down from 56% in 2024 and a peak of 70% in 2022. The shift in attitudes appears to correlate with changing political and social dynamics, including racially motivated incidents earlier this year.

The survey, conducted by Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University, highlights stark differences in opinion based on religious backgrounds. Support among Catholics stands at 61%, while only 42% of Protestants agree. This division may reflect broader societal tensions and the impact of recent events on public perception.

Despite the decline in overall support, a majority of respondents still believe in the duty to protect refugees fleeing persecution, with 57% in agreement. This suggests a complex relationship between public sentiment and the realities faced by asylum seekers, indicating that while support may wane, the moral imperative remains strong.

As Northern Ireland grapples with these changing attitudes, the implications for policy and community cohesion could be profound. The ongoing debate around asylum seekers will likely shape future discussions on immigration and social integration in the region.
