New Defence Pact Signals Shifts in Middle Eastern Alliances

The recent mutual defence agreement between Turkiye, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia marks a significant shift in regional security dynamics. This pact, which treats an armed attack on one as an attack on all, mirrors NATO’s collective defence principle and aims to strengthen military cooperation amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

As these three nations deepen their military ties, including joint exercises and defence industry collaboration, the implications extend beyond immediate military strategy. The agreement could reshape alliances in the region, potentially drawing in other countries like Egypt, and altering the balance of power in response to threats from Iran and other regional actors.

However, while such pacts are designed to deter large-scale conflicts, their effectiveness can diminish in ‘grey zone’ scenarios, such as proxy wars or internal repression. Analysts suggest that these alliances often serve more as political signals than as robust defence mechanisms, raising questions about their true impact on regional stability.

The historical context of similar alliances, such as NATO and the Arab League, highlights the complexities of collective defence agreements. While they can provide strategic reassurance, the real test lies in their practical application during crises, which remains uncertain in the current geopolitical landscape.
