Salem Rekoub, an illegal migrant who worked as a Deliveroo rider, has been sentenced to 21 years for raping a woman in Chelsea. This shocking case raises serious concerns about the vetting processes for gig economy workers in the UK. Rekoub, who was not a verified rider, exploited the system to gain access to vulnerable individuals.

The incident occurred when the victim, semi-conscious after a night out, was dragged off the street and assaulted. The attack, captured on CCTV, has left the victim with severe psychological trauma and physical injuries, highlighting the long-term impact of such crimes on individuals and their families.

This case also underscores the broader implications of illegal migration and the challenges in monitoring those working unlawfully in the UK. The Deliveroo spokesperson stated that measures to control access to their platform have been strengthened, yet questions remain about the effectiveness of these safeguards.

As the victim continues to struggle with the aftermath, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by individuals in public spaces and the urgent need for improved safety measures in the gig economy, where oversight can often be lax.
