Diana Evans has been awarded the Jhalak prose prize for her nonfiction collection “I Want to Talk to You,” which explores a range of topics from literary figures like Jean Rhys and Toni Morrison to contemporary issues such as the impact of lockdowns and reflections on the British monarchy. This recognition not only highlights Evans’ literary prowess but also underscores the importance of diverse voices in literature, particularly those of writers of colour in the UK and Ireland.

The Jhalak prize, which includes a £1,000 award, aims to celebrate and promote the works of underrepresented authors. Evans’ book was praised for its ability to engage readers in meaningful conversations about creativity, motherhood, and grief, showcasing the depth and relevance of her insights. This win is significant as it may inspire more publishers to invest in diverse narratives, potentially reshaping the literary landscape.

In addition to Evans, the Jhalak children’s and young adult prize was awarded to Fidan Meikle for “My Name is Samim,” a poignant story about an Afghan refugee. This choice reflects a growing recognition of the need for literature that addresses urgent social issues, particularly those affecting young readers. The poetry prize went to Maggie Harris for her work that intertwines themes of colonial history and contemporary identity.

The Jhalak awards serve as a platform for voices that often go unheard, encouraging a broader understanding of the cultural narratives that shape society. As these authors gain recognition, their stories may influence future generations and contribute to a richer, more inclusive literary culture in the UK.
