Diplomatic Strains Heighten Security Risks in Nigeria and the Sahel

A recent diplomatic rift between Nigeria and the Sahelian countries of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger is complicating efforts to tackle shared security threats. This divide has emerged following incidents like the detention of Nigerian Air Force personnel in Burkina Faso, highlighting the fragile state of relations. As these countries have formed the Alliance of Sahel States and distanced themselves from ECOWAS, the implications for regional security and cooperation are significant.

The withdrawal of Niger from the Multinational Joint Task Force has created a gap in counterterrorism efforts, allowing groups like ISWAP to exploit border vulnerabilities. With Nigeria sharing a long frontier with Niger, the potential for increased cross-border terrorism poses a direct threat to Nigerian security. The ongoing instability in Mali, evidenced by recent attacks, further exacerbates these risks, as militant groups operate with greater freedom in poorly coordinated security zones.

Trade and movement across borders are also at risk due to this political rupture. Nigeria, as West Africa’s largest economy, plays a crucial role in the Sahel corridor, and uncertainty surrounding trade rules could disrupt established patterns of commerce and migration. The ECOWAS has assured that citizens from the AES countries will continue to enjoy visa-free movement, but the long-term implications of this diplomatic fallout remain unclear.

As tensions rise, the potential for further confrontations could harden positions among these nations. The interconnectedness of security, trade, and diplomatic relations means that the current situation could have lasting effects on everyday life in Nigeria and its Sahelian neighbours, making it essential for all parties to seek a resolution to avoid further destabilisation.
