Scientists have identified the Praearcturus gigas, potentially the largest scorpion ever, from fossils dating back 415 million years. Found in the St Maughan’s Sandstone Formation across Wales and England, these fossils suggest a creature with a body length of about one metre and pincers measuring 16cm. This discovery not only sheds light on the size of ancient arthropods but also hints at the ecological conditions of early land ecosystems, which had minimal competition from other large animals.
The identification process has been lengthy, with initial discoveries made in the 1870s. Advances in imaging technology, such as CT scans and 3D modelling, have allowed researchers to confirm the scorpion’s classification, previously debated among scientists. The unique features of the sternum, shared with a Canadian fossil, provide compelling evidence for its classification as a scorpion rather than a crustacean.
