Disparities in Child Road Safety Highlighted by New Data

Recent figures reveal a stark contrast in child pedestrian casualties between England’s wealthiest and poorest areas. Children in the most deprived 10% of postcodes are nearly five times more likely to be killed or injured while crossing roads compared to those in affluent areas. This troubling trend has persisted over the last decade, raising concerns about road safety equity.

The Department for Transport’s analysis indicates that over 20% of child pedestrian casualties occur in the poorest areas, while only 4% are from the wealthiest. This disparity suggests that socio-economic factors significantly influence road safety, with poorer communities facing greater risks. The report also highlights that while overall road fatalities have decreased, the gap in safety outcomes for children has widened.

Campaigners stress the need for targeted interventions to address these inequalities. They argue that government strategies must focus on improving road safety infrastructure in deprived areas to ensure all children have safe access to roads. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents emphasizes that without addressing these disparities, efforts to reduce road deaths will fall short.

As the government develops its road safety strategy, it faces pressure to prioritize investments in communities most at risk. Ensuring equitable safety measures could be crucial in reversing the trend of increasing casualties among vulnerable populations, particularly children in low-income areas.
