Dover Border Delays Eased as France Suspends Extra Checks

Long queues at Dover have prompted French authorities to suspend additional EU border checks, a move aimed at alleviating congestion for holidaymakers. This decision comes after travellers faced delays of up to four and a half hours due to new biometric processing measures that were not fully operational.

The suspension is particularly timely as the May bank holiday weekend sees an influx of holidaymakers, coinciding with soaring temperatures across the UK. With the forecast predicting highs above 30°C, the combination of heat and travel stress could have made the situation even more challenging.

Passengers who missed their ferry due to these delays will now be able to board the next available crossing, easing some of the frustration. However, the underlying issues with the new Entry/Exit System remain, as the biometric checks are expected to be implemented soon, potentially leading to further delays in the future.

As the UK prepares for a busy travel season, this incident highlights the importance of efficient border processing. The temporary suspension may provide relief now, but travellers should remain aware of potential future disruptions as new systems are rolled out.
