Driver Sentenced for Fraudulent Claims About Electric Car Malfunction

Nathan Owen, a 33-year-old driver, has been sentenced to over four years in prison after falsely claiming that his electric Jaguar I-Pace malfunctioned while driving on the M58 motorway. Despite his assertions that he was unable to stop the vehicle, court evidence revealed that the car was stationary just moments before his emergency call to police. This incident not only endangered lives on the road but also led to significant financial repercussions for Jaguar Land Rover, which had to invest £50 million in marketing to mitigate the negative publicity stemming from Owen’s claims.

The court heard that Owen was in financial distress, having fallen behind on payments to a finance company. His fabricated story was an attempt to rid himself of the vehicle, which he had been unable to manage financially. The investigation, supported by data from the car, showed that he had full control throughout the incident, contradicting his claims of a malfunction.

Owen’s actions resulted in a dangerous chase, during which his vehicle collided with police cars multiple times before eventually stopping when the battery was depleted. This reckless behaviour not only posed a risk to himself but also to other road users and emergency workers on the motorway.

As a consequence of his actions, Owen has been disqualified from driving for five years, highlighting the serious legal repercussions of such fraudulent claims. This case serves as a warning about the potential dangers of dishonesty on the road and the broader implications for automotive manufacturers in the age of electric vehicles.
