Drivers Face Hefty Fines for Tinted Number Plates

Motorists are being warned that using tinted or darkened number plates could lead to fines of up to £1,000 and immediate MOT failures. This warning comes as searches for such plates have surged by 22% in recent months, coinciding with the introduction of new registration plates. Experts stress that while tinted plates may seem appealing, they can obscure vehicle identification, posing risks for road safety and law enforcement.

The regulations are in place to ensure that number plates are clearly visible to other drivers, police, and automatic number plate recognition systems. Any modification that hinders readability can result in significant penalties, including the inconvenience of having to replace plates if they fail an MOT.

Despite the risks, tinted and modified plates are readily available online, often marketed as compliant with regulations. However, buyers are cautioned that just because a product is sold online does not guarantee its legality for road use. It’s essential for drivers to verify that any replacement plates meet the necessary standards to avoid future complications.

Additionally, vehicle modifications should be reported to insurers, as failing to do so can lead to issues during claims. Experts advise that drivers should ensure their modifications are legal and visible to avoid hefty fines and potential insurance problems.
