Labour’s proposed changes to driving licence regulations will significantly affect thousands of Ukrainian motorists in the UK. The plan aims to extend the driving eligibility period for holders of Ukrainian licences from 36 months to 60 months, and for others from 54 months to 78 months. This extension is crucial for those temporarily residing in Britain, allowing them to continue driving without needing to convert their licence immediately.
The consultation revealed overwhelming support for these changes, with 95.31% of respondents in favour. However, concerns about road safety have been raised, particularly regarding the lack of a GB driving test. Critics argue that unfamiliarity with UK roads and signage could pose risks, despite assurances that Ukraine’s driving standards are comparable to those in the UK.
As of November 2025, over 278,000 Ukrainian nationals have arrived in the UK under various visa schemes. The new regulations will depend on the specific visa type, with some drivers eligible to operate vehicles for up to six years and six months after becoming residents.
This move not only supports Ukrainian nationals but also highlights the ongoing integration efforts within the UK. As the situation evolves, the implications for road safety and the driving landscape will need careful monitoring to ensure the safety of all road users.
