A significant investment of £24 million has been proposed for a new missile factory in Norfolk, aimed at producing Skyhammer missiles designed to counter military drones. This facility, located at the former RAF Coltishall base, could enhance the UK’s air defence capabilities, particularly against threats like Iranian drones used in conflicts such as the war in Ukraine.
Cambridge Aerospace, the company behind the plans, has rapidly grown since its establishment in 2024, now valued at $3.4 billion. The factory would not only manufacture missiles but also serve as a research and development hub, potentially increasing local employment from 21 to 60 jobs. The planning application is currently under review by North Norfolk District Council.
The Skyhammer missile, described by the Ministry of Defence as a cost-effective solution, has a maximum speed of 700 km/h and a range of 30 km. The factory’s output could significantly increase the number of interceptors available, addressing a critical gap in the UK’s defence strategy.
