Drought Conditions Lead to Hay Shortage in Cambridgeshire

The Wimpole Estate in Cambridgeshire is facing a significant hay shortage due to ongoing drought conditions, which have halted grass growth. Normally, the estate produces around 150 tonnes of hay, but this year, it has yielded none. As a result, livestock are being fed winter supplies earlier than usual, highlighting the broader impacts of climate change on agriculture.

This situation is not isolated; it marks the third severe drought in five years for the estate. The National Trust is implementing new strategies to adapt, including tree planting and enhancing rainwater storage to mitigate wildfire risks and support habitat restoration. These adaptations are crucial as drought affects not only crops and livestock but also wildlife and soil health.

The estate’s farm manager noted that grain yields have dropped by approximately 25%, and the production of straw has plummeted from 200 bales to just 60. The dry conditions have also led to the rapid spread of invasive plant species, further stressing local ecosystems and agricultural productivity.

To combat these challenges, the estate has planted 125,000 trees since 2021 and is exploring drought-tolerant crop varieties. While recent government support for farmers is welcomed, long-term resilience will require ongoing investment in climate adaptation and nature conservation efforts.
