Drought Declared Across England as Heatwave Looms

Almost three-quarters of England is now officially in drought, impacting 27 million people with water use restrictions. This rapid escalation is largely due to a combination of low rainfall and soaring temperatures, with the country bracing for its fifth heatwave this summer. Farmers are facing unprecedented challenges, reporting the earliest harvests in two decades and struggling with reduced yields and water access for crops.

Reservoir levels have plummeted to 69%, significantly below expectations for this time of year. The situation is exacerbated by rising river temperatures, which can harm aquatic ecosystems and further diminish water supplies. With no meaningful rain in sight, the National Farmers’ Union warns that livestock and dairy farmers are already resorting to winter feed due to halted grass growth.

The government’s response includes considering support measures for farmers and easing regulations for on-farm reservoirs. As the heatwave intensifies, health risks are rising, particularly for vulnerable populations, with the UK Health Security Agency reporting thousands of heat-related deaths this summer.

This drought not only highlights the immediate challenges for agriculture and water supply but also serves as a stark reminder of the long-term impacts of climate change, necessitating urgent adaptation strategies across various sectors.
