Dunedin, New Zealand, is experiencing a surge in hotel bookings as it prepares for its first total solar eclipse in over 850 years. Scheduled for July 22, 2028, this celestial event will cast a shadow across a 100km-wide band, plunging parts of southern New Zealand into darkness for nearly three minutes. With hotels already fully booked, the city anticipates an influx of around 35,000 visitors, significantly impacting local tourism and economy.

The last total solar eclipse visible from Dunedin occurred in 1163, making this a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many residents. The event coincides with Matariki, the Māori new year, creating a unique cultural celebration that blends astronomy with local traditions. This timing is expected to enhance the overall experience, drawing even more visitors eager to witness the eclipse.

Local astronomer Dr. Ian Griffin has been preparing for this event since 2013, highlighting its significance not just for Dunedin but for New Zealand as a whole. The eclipse will be the first total solar eclipse visible in New Zealand since 1965, marking a pivotal moment in the region’s astronomical history.

As anticipation builds, Dunedin’s mayor has noted the excitement throughout the city. This event is projected to boost local businesses and create a memorable experience for both residents and tourists, showcasing Dunedin as a prime destination for astronomical events.
